Truesight by Davig Stahler Jr. (SPOILERS)

DISCLAIMER: This contains spoilers!! I can release a version with no spoilers soon.

Before I get into what I liked (and didn't like) about this book, here is a summary of it:

Truesight by David Stahler Jr. is a dystopian novel revealing what might happen to society if it is not carefully watched. At the beginning of the story, it is revealed that everybody in the community is purposely born blind to ensure unity, purity, and freedom. When children turn thirteen, they are assigned a new role and join the workforce and food is carefully rationed for each family. To the main character Jacob and everybody else in the community, this model is perfect. Jacob’s whole life comes crashing down when he starts to experience pain in his eyes. As time goes on, Jacob’s pain mysteriously develops into sight. With sight he starts to see injustices in the world around him and also experiences the beauty of seeing. Poor people have to steal for food, families are treated unfairly, and he also enjoys viewing some things, adding to his guilt and confusion. At this point in the story, Jacob is confused and alone, going back and forth on whether or not to tell somebody about his sight. Jacob’s friend Delaney one day mysteriously dies of suicide. As Jacob’s Mother is quite distressed about Delaney’s death, Jacob uses a tool called a finder to search for her body and give one of her buttons to his mother. When the finder doesn’t find Delaney, Jacob figures out that she ran away, didn’t die, and the community leaders tried to cover it up to retain their image. Tired of feeling so alone and scared, Jacob tells his best friend Egan that he can see, and after Egan back-stabbingly tells his father, Jacob gets sent to a court trial to discuss what has to be done to him. The council eventually sentences Jacob to surgery that will remove his sight. When Jacob is alone with Delaney’s dad, also a part of the council, he tells him he knows that Delaney escaped, leading to the high councilor telling Jacob that it was for the best. After he says this, he winks, revealing the horrible truth that he can see. This frightens Jacon, and combined with all the other bad things he has seen in his community, causes him to run away. All in all, Truesight is a dystopian novel cautioning readers on what might happen to society.

Although I thought this book was absolutely terrific, I would place it lower than SOME of the other dystopian novels that I have enjoyed. Here's why:

Cons: Even though the climax is thrilling, it takes a considerably long amount of time for the author to get there. If the pacing was a bit faster, the text would be a lot more pulling

Pros: I have read countless dystopian novels that follow the same, boring plots, but this is a very unique idea!

What do you think? Is this a good novel or is it just another dystopian tragedy with a lot of potential?
